Problem
South Cape required an opaque white print on the window face of the packaging. There are few ways of producing this as the material is produced on rolls and is fed through the window facing machine on a reel. There was a real requirement for pre printing of the image prior to window face stage and we were running out of time to produce. This was the client’s first project and her business future hung on the balance of whether we could produce in time for her to hold her shelf position at the supermarkets.
Solution
We trialled two possible solutions.
The first was to web the material on our midsized machines, reel to reel and run white matte foil fed inline and in the same direction to the substrate, stamping the image as we would a normal process but without any sheets of paper feeding through the machine. Unfortunately we could not gain a consistent stamping location due to the continuously changing diameter of the roll and static electricity causing sticking issues.
The next solution saw the packaging cut and window faced prior to coming to foilmasters for finishing. We then adjusted our machines to suit an irregular shaped carton (instead of a squared edge carton) and foil stamped straight onto the window faced carton.
This solution worked perfectly. To ensure a clean result we had brass foil stamping dies manufactured.
Outcome
A clean, completely opaque and robust finish to the product, deadlines were met and the client continues to prosper.
